David Gifford, Director of Rhode Island Department of Health
As the opening speaker of the 1st Annual Culture Change Symposium, Dr. Gifford will present an
overall introduction to culture change in Rhode Island and welcome attendees.
Keynote Speaker:
Nancy Fox, Executive Director of Eden Alternative and Keynote Speaker
With her new book, The Journey of a Lifetime: “Leadership Pathways to Culture Change in Long-Term Care”, Nancy Fox draws from her life experiences as a nursing home administrator, caregiver, educator, student, mother, child and grandchild to paint a picture of life as it could be for our elders, and how we can make that happen as leaders and caregivers.
Break-out Session #1
Joe Angelelli, Pennsylvania Policy Director of the Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute
This session is designed for the attendant to gain insight into a movement in long-term care to collectively “junk the jargon”-to do away with institutional language and instead speak plainly in a way that makes it possible for the voices of elders to be heard. Additionally, Joe will touch upon gaining a better understanding of culture change coalitions. Nationally these coalitions have implemented many creative initiatives that have proven to bring increasd awareness of the culture change movement to their state.
Break-out Session #2
Heidi Gil, Executive Director of Wesley Village
This session will illustrate how creating a shared community vision will assist with sustaining change, keeping the momentum for progress, and ultimately, position their organization for the future. Case studies of Planetree Continuing Care Affiliates will demonstrate the outcomes of passion, process, and purpose in action.
Break-out Session #3
Stephen M. Jennings, Advocacy Volunteer for AARP
This workshop is for consumers and individuals interested in the consumers’ perspective. Consumers of long term care, both in the community and institutions, and their advocates are defining, building consensus, and implementing more consumer focused environments and procedures. This workshop will examine and discuss some of the Ocean State’s efforts and activities underway to move forward a long-term care system including both social and medical approaches in a consume- centered environment.
Break-out Session #4
Jack York, Co-Founder and President of It's Never Too Late & Nancy Fox, (see above)
They will provide their experiences and views as to how technology is working its way into senior living communities at a frantic pace. This hands-on presentation will show how adaptive computer technologies can transform the lives of older adults regardless of any physical or cognitive disabilities. Today this is considered innovative – tomorrow it will be demanded.
Closing Remarks:
Vincent Mor, Chairman of the Department of Community Health Brown University School of Medicine
As the closing speaker, Dr. Mor will briefly discuss his current nursing home culture change research.
